well, at least, I didn't see a shitty king.

4 mages and the hero ? Very odd party.
Especially if they're all of the same gender.

is he also a 40 year old virgin sage? That would make him too op

no, this is a little different. Normally what we get is someone who actually has nothing special or good about them and has a weak attitude. This guy has the same feeling that I and pretty much half of all other post-grad students do. "Yeah, we're making it through something that's considered super hard but because we're struggling, and our peers are putting up a front like they're doing ok (heads up, they're not. They're dying inside with lasting psychological trauma too) we can never feel like we deserve it."

in short, it's not really the same. Those are mcs that never really did anything and put themselves down for not being much. This is a mc that did accomplish something big but looks down on himself as the least among the great. It's a nice little nuanced feeling that will fuck up your day once you feel it.

@Meridis that kind of weak attitude isn't that uncommon in manga though, it's one of the things people complain about a lot

The end.

The way this chapter ended, it clearly has no continuation. There was no "but", and no chapter would end without at least writing the "but..." even if they wanted to leave the actual body of it to a later chap.

@Tiihokatti anime and manga are trash, but, if we are being honest here, so are we.

Uo Denim? Instant follow.

This Sage isn't very sagely.

Another one of these. I have read too many of these copypasta mangas that everything looks like one big blur to me.

Manga industry is truly oversaturated by the reincarnation/isekai/strongest-weakest/battle-school-fantasy setting. And now even Shoujo mangas are getting oversaturated by the otome-game isekai stuff.

And I still keep reading this trash. Maybe it's just that I'm trash too.

@Orenoname didn't notice that until I saw ur comment. Noice ( อก° อœส– อก°)

@Eviltwinq This isn't a niche genre. The trope is fucking everywhere.

@sjmcc13 Did you read the title? Unparalleled means he's the strongest period, unsuccessful means he certainly isn't considered to be in the top 4 of humanity. Also, I didn't say this is garbage because it's overused. It's both, for separate reasons. Every single title that uses it has a lazy deus ex machina to explain away the massive inconsistency between perception of the protagonist and the reality of his strength. I don't even care to humor your popularity defense, it's obviously absurd and fallacious.

@Meridis I don't read these. I just see a new one like every other time I look at the front page.

I can roughly see where you are both coming from but imo,

One could say that there are lots of unsuccessful academic genius and successful academic dropouts. But not in this case.

There is no such thing as shit but cheat. You are either OP breezing through life or you are seriously struggling for legit reasons. "Cheats" that get the short end of the stick like Naofumi(Shield Hero) are not 'shit' but that series doesn't revolve around people thinking he is useless to begin with.

Then there is the Index series where people don't even realize his ability exists (which is also somewhat fine) until maybe late in the series[on top of natural bad luck] (i remember nothing after Accelerator)

The real problems are stories like say... Rakudai Eiyuutan, that OP slime summoner story etc, whose story premise is about MC being 'trash' but secretly OP, gets involved with high leveled people that NORMALLY wouldn't care about peons, win, lots of wow. Different flavors of pretty much the same story is stupid regardless of how popular the trope is. Its becoming cancer like almost every Wuxia/Xianxia story. Not all of them are garbage but easily 95 out of 100 are technically garbage, regardless of whether we like it or not.

There is no such thing as Heroic Failures. Pick one. You can't be both at the same time. #4 out of 100 sounds pretty successful to me and that number is only going to get 'worst' when he reincarnates.

Now that i think about it, these cancer stories are like fried chicken. Popular enough to be everywhere, most of them taste the same, only a few actually really good ones.

@Meridis

Thanks for the practical guide to evil. I technically hate villain(?) stories (to the extent ditched Tyranny because of it) so i guess eating offals would be a good alternative to the usual chicken, fish and vegetables.

I'm not sure what you could do that would be considered a good hook for a reincarnation fantasy or isekai story at this point. We're at the point where everything you would have to do in the story to make it stand out isn't stuff that you could stuff into the first chapter, it would have to build itself on it's characters, world, or themes and not on the basic setup that comes at the beginning. For me, I'm a little interested just from the mc. I can empathize with his borderline impostor syndrome response to the recognition he's getting. Outside of something line that, I'm not sure what would get someone interested in this kinda story from the first chapter at this point.

@sjmcc13
@mommunism

honestly, if your seeing the same story alot, that's more an issue with the range of stories you read than their popularity. There's still a wide range of stories being put out, we just keep finding and looking for the same stuff for some reason. I saw a good web novel I've been meaning to try that looks quite different from this stuff, maybe you should give it a go too. It's called "A Practical Guide to Evil"

@mommunism : except he is not weak, just not as strong/talented as the other 3 sages. being #4 of 100+ is still pretty strong normally.

Also there is a difference between being a garbage and being overused, if you are seeing a lot of something then that usually means the trope is popular with the audience it is being made for which requires it NOT be garbage in order to get popular in the first place. Popularity leads to overuse, garbade leads to very little use. Learn the difference between bad and "I do not like".
