@kaminomikan Actually, Marie Antoinette only was queen and had no power over state matters, as that power was purely invested into the king's hands, thanks to policie taken by Louis the XIV. In fact, even her statement of "let them eat cake" has been debated over, and more or less people realized she meant it as "can't we give them cakes cause we gots a butt ton in the palace?" If you really want to know why went to shit right before the Revolution, look into the reign of Louis XV. That being said, do realize that nobles are first and foremost soldiers; they were awarded titles and land, as well as exemption from taxes, in return for using that income to raise a force as well as lead said force in battle. Countries with longer periods of peace have low numbers of nobility ( having around <1% of the population), while those that experience lots of warfare tend to have proportionally more. Additionally, stories about aristocracy are either aimed at "commoners" to gain popularity, or for propaganda reasons such as the Renaissance era writers trying to make the previous Medieval period look like a shithole in history. @adfjs You do realize that Kim Jong Un grew up in Switzerland and attended classes there? Others may have already tried assassinating him, only to fail. |

Uwa... An empire or kingdom, is nothing without the commoners to support it... If he just take all their means of survival to make gold statues, who will be left to pay those taxes after they all died/left ? This is why inbreed nobles are such a pain, they can't see something as simple as that. |

@Acolytus: Do isekai authors really think that a supreme idiot like this guy would last more than a week in charge before getting assassinated, facing revolution or being turned into the tool of someone more competent? Seeing his abnormal obsessiveness over loyalty to the king, I say he's already a tool of someone more competent.Not to mention that he might not be a noble in the first place since his land is given to him due to his effort in the battlefield. Also just gonna mention that the rebelling side also have a few nobles backing them, so I guess it's not exactly the "nobles are evil" cliche. The evil nobles are still comically evil so far though, so yeah. |

@Acolytus: If you want stories where non-ally nobles aren't complete trash, may I suggest Ascendance of Bookworm. Well, right now there's barely a presence of nobles in the translated part, but they'll show up. There's certainly plenty enough of trashy, brainless nobles, but surprisingly they're the minority. The majority of them have their own reasons to do things they do. Like a guy who's overbearing with his methods because that's the tradition from his region (a man who NEVER gives up not matter how many time he's rejected....the same region also have girls who propose by pinning down their target in a hold before proposing too) Or someone who force the girl to do something only out of desperation on his side. |

40K had 40,000 years of fluff to back the excessive use of force to subjugate rebellions. Historically, over-taxation and brutal suppression was not uncommon. In the Roman Republic in order to reduce the load on the central administration they would put up taxation of an area for auction to anyone to bid what they felt they could gather from the locals. The extra tax would be kept by the collectors for profits which escalated pretty quickly into the over-taxation of the population. However, one thing to keep in mind about tax was that it was not always done through gold. People paid tax however they could, often through paying with grain. Nobility could be valued by their ability to tax the grain from their peasants to the point where the farmers only had just enough grain/rice to feed themselves. If they took too much the people would starve and the grain gained the next year would plummet. If not enough was taken it was either considered a waste and could potentially feed rebellions. During japan's '200 years of peace' the shogun made sure to tax the pants off their people by adding new ways to drain the lord's coffers, resulting in a pretty shit life for most peasants. What we see in this chapter would inflate the value of gold to such a degree that they would have to sell off a HUGE amount of grain and other commodities to exchange for gold to make statues. Time for a rant: Yet again the "nobles are evil" cliche gets used to the point of stupidity in an isekai story because its needs a villain who is comically evil and edgy so the heroes can have the moral high ground. Do isekai authors really think that a supreme idiot like this guy would last more than a week in charge before getting assassinated, facing revolution or being turned into the tool of someone more competent? Nobles might have been dicks and some of them indeed did terrible or stupid things but no noble would be stupid enough to think peasants can be just starved to death and everything will be fine, or at least no noble who would get as far as this dude did. They were the people with access to superior education and being taught how to rule their land was probably one of the first things they learned. |

You can't write characters whose only trait is being a bastard. Excuse me? Why do none of the citizens here think in the same way? I thought those that can escape already escaped, that's why the town under the jingoist rule is relatively empty. Jesus...What the hell was that? You can't write characters whose only trait is being a bastard. It makes absolutely no sense why he's in any position of authority or why anybody would still dare to live in this country. In Overlord, citizens were fleeing Ainz Ooal Gown's country as fast as they could because they thought they were going to get demolished. Why do none of the citizens here think in the same way? You can't say that I'm overthinking this, or that I should "turn my brain off". Anybody that's seen actually interesting villains like the Goddess from Moon-led Journey, or even the Administrator from SAO Alicization, would be bursting out laughing at how bullshit this writing is. I don't need every manga to be a GITS philosophical endeavor. I don't even need every manga to be a Rougo ni Sonaete Isekai level of competence. I just want to be able to read some isekai without smashing my head on my keyboard every few seconds. |
